Hsuan Tung coin

hsuan_tung_coin.jpg For sale. In very good condition. Approximately the size of a U.S. quarter.

On the front: First Year of Hsuan Tung. Manchurian Provinces.

On the back are Manchurian characters which I have no way to decipher or translate.

I'm not quite sure how this came to be in my family's possession (like so many other coins and paper money, I'm still sorting through). I have a feeling my dad may have picked it up in the South Pacific during World War II.

For a better understanding of the importance of Chinese money and even Emperor Hsuan Tung, read, "The Fight For The Republic In China," by Bertram Lenox Simpson. The full text can be found on line and for free at Project Gutenberg. As for myself, I haven't read it. It's about 150,000 words, or 400 pages.
